FREE Teleseminar: Uncovering the “Hidden” Job Market

We’ve all heard about the allusive “hidden job market” – the 80% of jobs available that aren’t advertised. Wouldn’t you like to know how to find these opportunities? Imagine being one of a handful of candidates interviewed for a position instead of one in a stack of a hundred resumes.

Join Kathy Keshemberg as she shares how to design and launch a targeted job search. This free teleseminar will be on February 2, 2010, at 3:00 p.m. ET.

Can’t make the call? No problem! A link to the recording will be sent to all who pre-register. To get your name on the list, email Kathy at cpg@acareeradvantage.com.

Cover Letters Matter

By Kathy Keshemberg, NCRW, CCMC

I’m often asked “do I really need to include a cover letter?” My answer is always a resounding “Yes!” (and not just because cover letters are an add-on service that I sell!). I know – I’ve heard those hiring managers who say they don’t read the letter, but on the flip side, I’ve heard others say that they won’t consider a resume without a letter. Thus, to make everyone happy, include a letter (which can be tossed aside by those who don’t want to read it!).

Second, and more importantly, the cover letter is another sales opportunity. It gives you the chance to point out – in more direct language than with just a resume – why you are perfect for the position. Think about looking through the scope of a rifle: the resume is written to target the type of position in your site, the entire circle, while the cover letter–because you can change it each time used–can be laser-focused to that one specific opening in the crosshairs.

Cover Letter Structure

Opening – You want to immediately capture the attention of the reader by indicating the value you offer which will entice them to continue reading. Instead of using the old standard, “I am writing to express interest in the position of Sales Manager as advertised on CPGJoblist,” use something more exciting: “As a seasoned sales professional with a proven ability to drive revenue growth in a down economy (5 percent year-over-year growth in an industry where most competitors were losing money), I have the expertise to deliver both immediate and sustained sales growth as your next Sales Manager.”

Body – Emphasize your value and accomplishments that are relevant to the job duties outlined in the posting. Include 2-3 bullet points that highlight your very best value statements/accomplishments. (Caution: DO NOT copy statements directly from your resume! Reword statements or better yet, take the opportunity to introduce additional accomplishments.) The goal is to parallel your strengths and experience with those being sought, highlight your promise of value theme from your resume, and incorporate keywords from the job posting.

Closing – Wrap-up on one sentence that clearly articulates why you are the best qualified candidate and end with a simple statement requesting an opportunity for an interview.

Effective cover letters succinctly focus on the value you offer, contain essential, hard-hitting information, and entice the reader to want to proceed to your resume. And yes, they are necessary!

For more than two decades, Kathy Keshemberg, NCRW, CCMC and her team at A Career Advantage have been providing professionals with world-class resume consultation and writing, career coaching and personal branding services. Learn more…

Ed. Note: When applying to a position on CPGjoblist, you will be given the opportunity to upload a cover letter as part of the application process. Be sure to create your cover letter in a word processing program like Microsoft Word, then import it when prompted in the application process.

MESSAGE FROM PENNY     Penny Sallberg-Carrillo, SVP CPGjoblist

Your CPGjoblist – Where We’ve Been, and Why We’re “Going to the Fish”

We know that many of you have been working with CPGjoblist for a while— in some cases through several career transitions. If you are one of our “veterans” you know that 2009 was a year of change here at CPGjoblist.

Just like you, we’re navigating the rocky seas of this economy with one eye on the horizon, and one eye on the compass; continuing to adhere to our core values of delivering exceptional service to candidates while trying to figure out how to do things more efficiently and with fewer resources.

Last June, CPGjoblist implemented our new candidate profile registration system. Many of you provided BETA testing through that initial launch, making it possible for us to streamline the candidate registration process. What you may not know is that our transition to that new system also made it much easier for hiring companies to find you.

Your new profile format makes it possible for our clients to specifically search every single field in your profile, plus keywords in your resume when looking for candidates with a specific background or skill set. This change makes it that much more important for you to fill out your Candidate Profile completely.

This year, CPGjoblist also got involved with LinkedIn in a BIG way. Our Professional Group CPGpeople is now nearly 10,000 strong— and has blossomed into a terrific forum for people within our industry to network, share ideas discuss strategy…and of course, find out about new opportunities. We’ve also “LinkedIn-enabled” most of the positions listed on the CPGjoblist job board, making it easier than ever for you to research the positions you see listed on CPGjoblist and gain introduction to insiders at your target companies.

Finally, in 2009 we began experimenting with bringing you value-added services through partnerships with best-in-class providers like professional resume writer Kathy Keshemberg. Since introducing Kathy and her company A Career Advantage to you last spring, hundreds of CPGjoblist professionals have contacted her about creating a polished, attention-grabbing resume. Kathy previously worked with the folks at The Ladders and we’ve been very pleased with the reception her services have received here at CPGjoblist. So pleased in fact, that we anticipate introducing additional useful services to CPGjoblist Candidates throughout 2010.

So where are we going this year? Well you might say CPGjoblist is “going to the fish.” Yes, we said fish— Big Fish, that is.

This economy has been particularly challenging for mid to upper level managers with salaried earnings of $130K or more. With the abundance of candidates at this career level in the job market, it has become increasingly difficult for truly exceptional candidates to get noticed.

In response, CPGjoblist will soon be introducing our new program called “Big Fish.” Big Fish is a new level of service we’ll be offering to candidates currently earning at least $130K annually on their base and will include a whole host of benefits including personal representation to hiring companies, discounts on useful products and services and more. If you’re a Big Fish, you’ll be receiving information about this exciting new program in the next 30 days. If you’d like to learn more now, give us a call at 626-535-0143 or email me at penny@cpgjoblist.com.

Finally, this year, look for more improvements to the CPGjoblist website. We have (long awaited) plans for upgrading and updating every aspect of our online presence and will be soliciting your input as we move forward through the second half of the year.

Let me take this opportunity to once again thank you for making CPGjoblist part of your career management strategy. We’ll continue to work hard through 2010 to add more high-quality hiring companies as the year progresses and look forward to providing you with the service you’ve come to expect throughout the year!
