PROFESSIONAL NETWORKING

Filling The Time Between Jobs…Productively!

By Kathy Keshemberg, NCRW, CCMC

We’ve all seen the reports; it’s taking (on average) three months to land a new gig. So what do you do with your time (besides look for a new job)? How will you answer the interview question, “What have you been doing since leaving your last employer?” Here are some ideas …

Volunteer — There are a multitude of organizations in your community who exist solely on the hours donated by volunteers. Not only is this an opportunity to make a difference by sharing your time and expertise, it’s also a great way to network. You’re not just “telling” what you can do, you’re demonstrating. Plus, it will be a rewarding life experience!

Internship — Typically reserved for new college grads, there is a growing trend of adults seeking internships to explore/learn about careers to transition into. You have the opportunity to learn first-hand the requirements of your new career path, but also it’s a foot in the door for possible full-time employment. Since an internship is a low-pay or no-pay position, the hours will be flexible so you can continue your job search activities.

Continuing Education — With technology and the work place changing so rapidly, taking a class to update or learn new skills, or beginning an advanced degree program is an excellent use of your time. This activity will demonstrate to your future employer that you are a life-long learner and that you are staying current within your area of expertise.

Leadership — Become involved in your trade association, community organizations, or other professional groups, but rather than simply attend meetings, accept a leadership role. Serve on the board of directors, chair a committee, spearhead an event – any of these activities will give you visibility and the chance to showcase your skills.

Consultant — Accept short-term consulting jobs, either for pay, as a volunteer, or even on a barter basis. The terms of your involvement don’t need to show up on your resume, but the experience and results you deliver will be impressive.

Job Seekers Group — Job search is a lonely activity! Meeting on a regular basis with a group of your peers in the same situation is a good way to gain support and to network.

Enjoy Yourself — Looking for work is a stressful time, so be sure to take time for you! Tackling some of those projects you didn’t have time to do while working will give you a real sense of accomplishment. And while finances are often tight during this time, there are plenty of low-cost activities you can do with your family such as bicycling, hiking, working out, or home organization projects. Taking time away from your job search is imperative for your sanity!

For more than two decades, Kathy Keshemberg, NCRW, CCMC and her team at A Career Advantage have been providing professionals with world-class resume consultation and writing, career coaching and personal branding services.

MESSAGE FROM PENNY     Penny Sallberg-Carrillo, SVP CPGjoblist

Candidates Ask:
“Why Do I Have To Fill Out All This Stuff Anyway?”

This month I want to visit a set of comments I periodically receive from candidates; “Why do I have to fill out all this ‘profile’ information on your website? I have a resume, why can’t I just upload it and be done with it? I am just going to skip your website and apply to the job through the company’s site!” Why do you have to make things so difficult?

I have to admit that my sympathies are truly with job seekers these days. There can be no doubt that looking for a job is a full-time job. In many respects it does seem as though the dizzying array of internet based job tools, corporate web sites and job aggregator sites are devices specifically designed to waste your time, frustrate you and keep you from your ultimate goal of finding a new position.

Nonetheless, there are good reasons why you should take the time to fill out a complete Profile on CPGjoblist.

1. Having a resume online isn’t enough.
The fact is that Hiring Managers and corporate recruiters look for very specific skill sets when searching for viable candidates, especially now when there are so many candidates seeking positions. These folks are searching large candidate databases for the appearance of particular keywords within resumes. It is a rare resume indeed that is optimized properly for the keywords most pertinent to your job search.

The CPGjoblist Candidate Profile form is specifically designed to call-out those particular skill sets that our clients look for when searching for CPG experienced professionals. Your resume alone may not highlight these particular features, and so filling out your profile completely effectively augments the information found on your resume. This Profile information is specific to the CPG industry. So while you may have a really terrific resume, having a complete Candidate Profile is essential to your being seen by hiring managers.

I should also mention that many candidates are concerned about their resume being “public.” Such concerns about privacy are well founded, and this is where CPGjoblist really shines. With our site, YOU decide which companies have access to your information. This is the part of your Candidate Profile called “Select Your Target Companies.” ONLY those companies you select can see your Profile. With CPGjoblist YOU control the access to your information, unlike other job boards like The Ladders, Career Builder, Monster, etc.

2. Applying to positions directly through the company’s website.
Going directly to a company’s website and applying for positions certainly is an option open to all candidates. In fact, many of our clients automatically redirect your application right to their own website as a matter of course. So, why should you take the time to fill out your Profile at CPGjoblist?

Applying to positions directly on company websites can frequently feel like landing in a “black hole.” Realize that the large CPG companies literally receive thousands of applications for each advertised position and many of these applicants have no CPG experience at all. Imagine being on the other end of this, trying to sift through bazillions of unqualified resumes. If you know anything about statistical probability, you can see that applying for positions this way can radically reduce your chances of ever being seen.

When you complete your Profile at CPGjoblist, you are going into a much more targeted “bucket” than simply applying for specific jobs at each company advertising a position. Your Candidate Profile will be seen by hiring managers at as many companies as you permit in your Profile, with the added advantage of being “optimized” for the key skills and background those companies are looking for.

Certainly, if you are asked to fill out an application online at a company’s website through the application process you should do so. But don’t discount the value of having a complete CPGjoblist Profile. Take the time to do it (once). Our client-employers know the value of CPGjoblist and the quality of candidate that registers with us. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be paying us to advertise on our site!

Finally there is one additional advantage to completing a Candidate Profile on CPGjoblist. If you feel that you are absolutely perfect for a position that you see advertised on our site, give me a call. I can get your information directly into the hands of the hiring manager and make sure your resume and background are seen. No, I can’t “get you the job.” But this is certainly a leg up over the thousands of other applicants that may have applied for a given position on the company’s website. And it all starts with a complete CPGjoblist Candidate Profile.

3. Why Things Are “So Difficult.”
As I said earlier, I am truly sympathetic with the difficulties you encounter simply trying to find a new job, and honestly, we are not trying to make things difficult. I think that our Candidate Profile process is really quite straightforward and you only need to do it once unless something changes for you. Most people take less than a half hour to complete the process.

As a matter of fact, you may find yourself most frustrated with the myriad of interfaces, and poor or non-intuitive functionality at a lot of the corporate career sites. But understand that corporations’ career sites are highly regulated and they are required to comply with a complex and mandated set of standards that change over time.

Finally, most corporations’ career sites don’t allow you to simply express interest in hearing more about potential opportunities at the company. You must specifically apply for an open position in order to register on their sites. Then, of course you can sign up for their job alerts (if they send them). Alternatively, when you create a Candidate Profile at CPGjoblist, you needn’t apply to anything to receive information about open positions at the companies you are most interested in.

In closing I want to tell each and every one of you reading this that our sole purpose in being here is to help you find your next terrific opportunity. We are real people here at the other end of the phone and we truly want to help you in your job search process. As an experienced CPG professional, YOU are the “cream of the crop,” and we’d like nothing better than to make the right connections on your behalf to help you land the job!

Let us know how we can help!

Best wishes,
