INDUSTRY BRIEFS: Unilever, the world's third largest food group, reports that it sees no signs yet that the slowdown in the U.S. economy is hitting its foods business or that consumers are switching to cheaper products, Reuters reports. The Anglo-Dutch food company said it has offset the sharp rise in commodity costs by increasing its prices and cutting costs and seen no immediate effect on salesSara Lee is interested in acquiring Interstate Bakeries, makers of Wonder and Hostess brand products, according to Crain’s Chicago Business. KNOW THY CONSUMER: Food quality is not the main reasons consumers choose a market, according to a new report from Vertis Communications. The study finds that just 1 percent of adults say overall food quality is the reason they choose a supermarket, while low prices and convenience -- especially how close the store is to either work or home -- is far more important.
