ONE INDUSTRY, ONE STANDARD? The U.S. House of Representatives voted 283-189 to approve the National Uniformity for Food Act. The controversial measure now goes to the Senate, where it has yet to find a sponsor. The Act establishes national uniform food safety standards and warnings for packaged foods, overriding state laws. GMA president C. Manly Molpus said, “The House vote reaffirms the belief that all consumers should have the best, science-based food safety standards and information available to them regardless of where they live.”
STAPLES GETS SMALL: Stop & Shop and Giant are joining forces with Staples to roll out a new “store within a store” concept. The Maryland-based supermarket chain will feature Staples-branded home-office supply sections in 550 of its Stop & Shop and Giant Food Stores throughout the Northeast. The Staples sections will feature 500 to 1,200 school and home office essentials.
