COVER STORY
Employee loyalty -- more valuable than you think
What's the price of executive turnover? One consumer packaged goods executive recently estimated the cost of replacing a senior-level manager with eight years experience at $600,000, including the expense of hiring, training, lower productivity, lost knowledge base, and, more often than not, increased salary.
With employee retention so important, it's surprising how little value some companies place on it, according to Michael Carrillo, president of CPGjoblist. "By the time a dissatisfied manager has made the decision to leave, it is already too late," he says. "In most cases the manager could have been retained had the company listened to their needs; the irony is that this almost always would have been cheaper than replacing them."

HOT PRODUCTS: Despite record activity, the success rate for new CPG products remains low. CPGjoblist client IRI reports that less than 25 percent of new CPG products reached "Pacesetter" status in 2004-2005 ($7.5 million or more in sales). Among the winners: New brands offering taste and variety (Budweiser Select, Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper and Gatorade Lemonade); brands offering reduced calories, portion control or weight management (Frito Lay Light, Nabisco 100 Calorie Packs and Slim-Fast Optima); and co-branded products (Tide with Downy and Tide with Febreze). Performance enhancements were popular across several categories, including trash bags (Glad ForceFlex offering "no rip" protection); cosmetics (Maybelline Intense XXL Mascara delivering “10X the volume”); and skin care (Neutrogena Advanced Solutions offering "professional quality anti-acne and anti-aging treatments.") In a declining trend, fewer Pacesetter products offered convenience than years past. Visit the GMA website for the complete IRI New Product Pacesetters Report for 2004-2005.
LATTE LOVE: Starbucks will start serving coffee inside Stop & Shop grocery stores, the Boston Globe reports. The first shops will go in as many as 45 new and existing supermarkets run by Stop & Shop in New York and New Jersey this spring, expanding to Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Hampshire in 2007. The Globe called the move "an apparent effort to challenge Dunkin' Donuts' dominance in New England." The in-store Starbucks stores will offer a complete menu, sell packaged Starbucks coffees not typically available in grocery stores, and feature table seating and wireless Internet access at certain locations. "This fits into our strategy of opening in places where customers want us to be," said Nick Davis, a Starbucks spokesman.
