Everyone talks about diversity. But genuine progress on the advancement of women and people of color in the consumer packaged goods industry has been slow.
Consider these facts reported by the Network of Executive Women: While three-quarters of the American population and nearly two-thirds of the nation’s workforce is comprised of women and ethnic minorities, women comprise just 19 percent of senior management positions, while people of color hold only 16.7 percent of these key management roles.

BIG BOX GETS BIGGER: Electronics, home improvement and discount stores were the big winners in the retail sales derby last year. The National Retail Federation reported that 2005 retail sales increased 6.1 percent overall last year. Retailers promoted the holiday season earlier and attracted consumers into stores with steep discounts. A slowdown in the housing market, coupled with soaring gas prices, have some analysts predicting a significant downturn in consumer spending this year. The NRF forecasts a retail sales increase of 4.7 percent this year, less than 2005.
HISPANIC MARKET HOT: U.S. Hispanics are not just the fastest-growing population segment, they go grocery shopping three times as often as non-Hispanics and spend 43 percent more per household on food than non-Hispanics, according to the Food Marketing Institute. A new study by CPGjoblist client Unilever says that Hispanic consumers shop much like the general market but have more complaints about their retail experiences in supermarkets, drugstores and other outlets. The research is based on diaries and shopping receipts from New York, Los Angeles, Houston and Miami.
RETAIL ROUNDUP: Winn-Dixie has won court approval to sell 29 supermarkets in Florida and the Bahamas. Upon completion of the deal, Winn-Dixie will operate 538 stores in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Louisiana, including 10 that remain closed as a result of Hurricane Katrina. In related news, Associated Grocers of Florida upped its bid for Winn-Dixie's Pompano Beach, Fla., distribution center to $51 millionThe FT reports that Tesco PLC is quietly preparing to enter the U.S. market. Citing new job ads and real estate sources, the paper says the new U.S. chain will be called "Tesco Fresh & Easy," and that Los Angeles and Phoenix will likely see the first stores Target will increase food capacity at 50 to 75 general merchandise stores by year's end, Supermarket News reportsWal-Mart is opening six new and expanded Supercenters in Ohio.
