National Black MBA Conference shows power of diversity
CPGjobs plunged into the one of the nation’s richest talent pools last month, joining more than 400 exhibitors and an estimated 15,000 candidates at the National Black MBA Association 2007 Conference and Exposition, September 11-16 in Orlando.
President Michael Carrillo said “the quality of the candidates was more than matched by the commitment to recruiting diversity shown by the employers, including many CPGjobs clients, in attendance. Contacts were being made fast and furious.” Carrillo headed a three-person team that represented CPGjobs at the conference, one of the nation’s largest recruiting events.
“The energy level was high and the atmosphere very competitive,” said Tami Page, vice president of sales for CPGjobs. “Many of our clients and prospects were making hires -- and these employers were excited to hear about our new offerings and services.”
Spencer Blaker observed “that the people who attended the NBMBAA were fully engaged and passionate about creating an ethnically diverse and inclusive culture. There is a big push to figure out a better way to source diversity and get talent.” Blaker is the firm’s director of sales for the northeastern region.
CPGjobs executives met with more than 100 clients and prospects, including some of the world’s largest companies in the consumer packaged goods, entertainment, finance, restaurant and hospitality industries. “Our meetings with Campbell's Soup Company, Kellogg's, Clorox, Beam Global, Kraft and Coca-Cola were especially good,” Page said. “Through meetings like these we have either gained new business or strengthened our ties to the CPG industry’s leading companies.” She cited as an example an invitation by Clorox for CPGjobs to participate in their prestigious 2007 Engineering & Technology Diversity Summit November 16 in San Francisco.
Blaker met with Diageo, Hewlett-Packard and Dell. “These companies are looking for targeted means to reduce their recruiting overhead and build talent within the organizations,” he said. “They are cutting edge.”
More targeted
“Building our client roster isn’t just good for us and our candidates,” Carrillo said. “It’s good for our entire network. The more employers who are part of the CPGjobs network, the more buzz for everyone.” But he said the company was not interested in just any candidates. “Quality is key.”
Blaker agreed. “More does not really equal better when it comes to resumes. Targeted service delivers more viable candidates, builds the pipeline and reduces waste.” He added, “Companies are looking at their current staffing systems and actively working on building a networking pipeline versus just resume pushers. It seems like today's model is not hitting on all cylinders, and they are looking to change.”
CPGjobs has been on the road meeting clients and introducing its recruiting services to potential employers. This includes the Pay-per-Hire package that offers unlimited job postings and guaranteed hires, and People Finder, a resume search tool that gives employers a weekly update on candidates who’ve expressed an interest in working for them. The firm will continue to offer Pay Per Post and professional recruiting services in addition to its new Pay Per Hire service.
Diversity critical
It addition to the NBMBAA show in September, CPGjobs sponsored and attended the California Diversity Council’s first Diversity Leadership conference in San Francisco. Representatives from the firm will also be at the National Society of Hispanic MBA Conference and Career Expo October 4-6 in Houston.
“Diversity is extremely important to the industry,” Page said. “We met with several executives in charge of diversity for their organizations. They come to conferences such as this to increase the percentage of diverse candidates in their organizations. We come to let them know we can be part of that process.”
Blaker said, “As a woman-owned organization, we pride ourselves on our corporate commitment to diversity.” He said that ethnic minorities comprise 18 to 20 percent the firm’s candidates. “This rich reflection of ethnic diversity is something we take great pride in. It is rooted in our corporate belief that diversity of culture, heritage and thought are building blocks to innovation, growth and excellence.
CPGjobs is a member of the National Society of Hispanic MBAs, the National Black MBA Association and the Society of Human Resource Management. It is a founding sponsor of the California Diversity Council and a sponsor and active participant in the Network of Executive Women, Consumer Products and Retail Industry.
Carrillo said CPGjobs is committed “to providing a diverse candidate pool to our clients because our clients want it, because it’s right, and because it is the smart thing to do. Companies with a diverse leadership respond better to their customers, have more dynamic decision-making, better morale, fewer grievances and, ultimately, a better bottom line.”
