HOLIDAY ON ICE? Analysts predict that higher gas prices and the lingering affects of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma may depress retail sales this holiday season. Retailers like Wal-Mart are announcing early discounts to boost sales in advance of the season by slashing prices up to 30 percent on its hottest toys. Toys R Us Inc. responded with similar moves. But manufacturers and the industry shouldn’t panic. Experts say holiday spending patterns are notoriously difficult to predict and can break at the last minute.
